About the Brand
Luke Hammond Jewelry is a fine jewelry brand based in Columbus, Ohio. Our collections comprise rare and carefully created jewelry, unique engagement rings, and sculptural objects that reimagine biological form to explore themes of impermanence, consciousness, and connection between all living things. Inspired by Luke’s work in biomedical imaging and neuroscience research, these organic designs draw on biophilia and our innate attraction to living systems to encourage reflection on what lies below the surface of our beings. Our mission is to create meaningful and lasting pieces to celebrate moments of love, union, and personal expression. Each piece is uniquely handcrafted using ethically sourced materials, with a focus on sublimely colored sapphires mined in Australia and the USA.
About the Designer
Luke Hammond is an Australian-born neuroscience imaging scientist and artist based in Columbus, Ohio. An exhibition development award (QCA/Flying Arts) allowed him to present his first solo exhibition of jewelry and silver sculptures, In This Unfolding, at the Queensland College of Art in 2015. The success of this exhibition led to continued opportunities to bridge art and science, and his carefully detailed fine jewelry and objects exploring the invisible worlds within continue to be exhibited nationally and internationally. In 2017, Luke moved to New York City to establish an advanced light microscopy platform at Columbia University. During this time, he honed his skills in gem and diamond setting and refined techniques for surface detailing of precious metals. Being passionate about using the highest quality ethically sourced materials, he has continued to expand his knowledge of diamonds and gemstones through studies at the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) in New York City and was highlighted as a GIA Alumni in 2021. In 2023, Luke joined the Department of Neurology at The Ohio State University and reestablished his studio in Columbus, Ohio.
With over a decade of experience working with gold, diamonds, and precious gems, he continues to explore and refine techniques to translate the world beneath the surface into unique and rare golden forms.
In the studio, Luke draws upon silver and goldsmithing techniques to translate the dynamic processes observed in nature at the macro and micro scales into intricate precious metal forms. Combining lost wax casting with hand fabrication and precision stone setting methods allows him to bring these objects to life.
Luke also has an extensive background in imaging and biomedical research. In 2017, after establishing a world-leading advanced imaging facility at the University of Queensland's Queensland Brain Institute, he transitioned to Columbia University's Zuckerman Mind Brain and Behaviour Institute, where he ultimately served as Director of a state-of-the-art light microscopy platform for neuroscience research. In 2023, he was recruited as Director of Quantitative Imaging in the Department of Neurology at The Ohio State University. His work involves exploring the unseen worlds within the body and brain and developing new software tools to understand the beautiful and complex images created in this process. He has published and collaborated on projects related to consciousness, movement, pain, Alzheimer’s disease, Schizophrenia, and other themes in neuroscience. Moreover, by working between the worlds of art and science, he has been able to facilitate public engagement with advanced neuroscience.
